Abstract

This study attempted to examine the effect of mentalization on interpersonal problem among college students and to verify the mediating effect of pain tolerance and experience avoidance in this process. For this purpose, the results of an online survey conducted with 300 college students from the metropolitan area were analyzed. Following the study, first, mentalization showed a positive correlation with pain tolerance and negative correlated with experience avoidance and interpersonal problems. Also, pain tolerance was negatively correlated with experience avoidance and interpersonal problems, and experience avoidance was positively correlated with interpersonal problems. Second, pain tolerance mediated the influence of mentalization on interpersonal problems. Third, experience avoidance mediated the influence of mentalization on interpersonal problems. Fourth, pain tolerance and experience avoidance sequentially mediated the effect of mentalization on interpersonal problems. Based on the findings, the study's significance, limitations, and future research directions were discussed.
