Abstract

This study examined the emotional expressions and social support provided to senior YouTubers by analyzing comments on their content. First, LDA topic modeling revealed that these comments were categorized into three distinct topics. Second, we extracted 751 adjectival expressions occurring at least once within the entire comment dataset. Notably, younger viewers predominantly conveyed positive sentiments towards senior YouTubers, using words such as “nice,” “cool,” “cute,” and “adorable.” Negative sentiments directed at seniors such as “dislike,” “weird,” “stuffy,” and “dirty were comparatively rare. Finally, we extracted expressions of online social support within the comments and identified four components of such support: respectful-emotional support, companionship support, material support, and informational support. Based on the above results, this study has uncovered insights into addressing generational conflicts and has proposed opportunities and implications for fostering a harmonious coexistence between older and younger generations within society.
