Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the perceived belonging in sport scale developed by Allen (2006). In addition, to examine the convergent, and discriminant validity of the perceived belonging in sport scale, it was to test the relationships with motivation and demotivation coaching styles (i.e., autonomy supportive and control coaching behaviors). For this way, 301 athlete-students participated in this study. In this study, confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson’s correlation, Cronbach’s alpha and regression analysis were employed to examine scale validity and reliability. The results showed that the good fit of the hypothesized one-factor model was found, and alpha coefficient. In the criterion validity, the perceived belonging in sport scale was positive correlations with autonomy supportive coaching behavior, whereas it was negative correlations with control coaching behavior. Overall, the results suggest that Korean version of the perceived belonging in sport scale demonstrated good internal, factorial, and predictive validity as well as internal consistency. In conclusion, it is expected that the results of this study will be able to specifically measure and evaluate the sense of belonging in the sports context, helping to identify the relationship and influence with the relevant variables.
