Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study was to develop and verify its validity the Career Barriers Inventory(CBI) of adolescents. Methods Based on the concept of contextual barriers in the selection model of social cognitive career theory(SCCT) devised by Lent et al. (1994), the concept of career barriers was established as a monistic point of view limited to environmental barriers. Based on this point of view, initial items were selected, from previous studies. After verifying the validity of the contents by related research experts, an item comprehension test was conducted on 10 middle and high school students, and a total of 27 scale items were developed. Data were collected from middle and high school students nationwide, and 128 of the preliminary survey and 236 of the main survey were used for tool development as valid data. Results Major findings of the study were as follows; The construct validity of the EFA conducted using the preliminary survey data was secured and a preliminary scale with a total of 27 items was developed. In addition, as a result of CFA using the data of this survey to determine the model suitability, the CBI model for adolescents with a total of 22 items of 4 factors finally satisfied all validation criteria. As a result of examining the correlation between the sub-factors of CBI and the sub-factors of self-esteem and social support, all of them were significant and the coccurrent validity was verified. Conclusions Based on the theoretical and empirical basis for the career barriers of monism, which were defined only for the internal and external barriers of SCCT, the sub-factors of career barriers for middle and high school students were identified, and a systematic validation process was performed to develop the CBI for adolescents and verify its validity.
