Abstract
The Choganjeong Pavilion(草澗亭) located in Jukrim-ri, Yongmun-myeon, Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is a pavilion administered by Kwon Munhae(權文海), a famous scholar in the mid-Joseon Dynasty. This pavilion possessing beautiful scenery is currently designated and managed as Scenic Sites of State-designated Cultural Property and Tangible Cultural Property of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Due to its reputation, it has been addressed in many previous studies, but inaccurate information is still found in literature and, in addition to the outcome of previous studies, new data with research value have been discovered.
Choganjeong Pavilion, initially administered by Kwon Munhae, was burnt down during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and was rebuilt by his son Kwon Byeol(權鼈). Choganjeong Pavilion restored by Kwon Byeol was destroyed again by fire and was rebuilt by Kwon Bong-eui(權鳳儀) in the 18th century. Park Son-gyeong(朴孫慶), who was asked to write a writing to remember the history of this pavilion by Kwon Eungtak(權應鐸), the grandson of Kwon Bong-eui, wrote 「Choganjeongsajungsuki」(草澗精舍重修記). In the 19th century, Kwon Hyeonsang(權顯相) completed Kwon Munhae's 『Daedongwunbugun-ok』(大東韻府群玉) and expanded the scale by administering Baekseung-gak House(百承閣). Later, Kwon Juhwan(權胄煥) succeeded the family line and repaired the buildings including the house of monks, and the pavilion became the most valuable cultural space in Yecheon in modern times.
The status of Kwon Munhae played an important role in the Choganjeong Pavilion's current reputation. The Yecheon Kwon family of writers preserved the history of The Choganjeong Pavilion to honor the reputation of their ancestors. In addition, many of the poems that recited the Choganjeong Pavilion focused on its beautiful scenery. This proves that Choganjeong Pavilion has a unique and outstanding view and is worthy of being evaluated as a scenic spot. However, these results are only a general historical flow through the identification of the period of poetry and prose, and it is hoped that these results serve as a basis for revealing the status and value of the Choganjeong Pavilion in the future.
