Abstract

There are, but few, publications discussing the translation of small format texts. This article aims to fill this niche. The translation of aphorisms has its own specifics, which is to a great extent explained by their format – they are very short texts. The translator has no chance to comment on his/her choice in order not to break the laws of the genre. The actualization of the pragmatic effect is also handicapped by differences in language systems. Lichtenberg’s „Sudelbücher“ contains small format texts of various genres, some of which are aphorisms. Thus the translator must independently choose suitable texts. In the article below the authors analyse the translations of aphoristic texts from the anthology “Aphorisms”.
