Abstract

Family problems, the importance of family values and traditions have become sharply defined against the background of the growth of the feminist movement, the destruction of the foundations of the traditional family, complex and contradictory processes taking place within it, destructive trends that contribute to the crisis of the family institution. The institution of polygamy appeared in Dagestan in the post-Soviet period, which was not widely spread in the history of the Dagestan residents. In this regard, it is important to study polygamy, to determine the degree of its prevalence, its reflection on the family climate, on the relationship between spouses. Moreover, within its framework, it is important to identify the attitudes of the republic inhabitants to this issue and their assessment of Sharia marriage, because men who have a "second wife" cannot formalize their relations.  The author examines the attitude of the Dagestan residents to concubinage, more often called cohabitation (because only relations registered in the registry office can be called a family union). The author's hypothesis is initially based on the dominance of Sharia marriage, concluded according to Islamic canons, over an officially registered relationship. The empirical material shows the prevalence of the priority of Sharia marriage in the mass consciousness of the respondents. Moreover, the respondents see that it is unacceptable to identify it with сoncubinage. At the same time, there is an inconsistency in the answers of the respondents: on the one hand, they appeal to Islamic postulates in the family and marriage sphere (our religion allows us to marry according to Islamic prescriptions, and this is more important than registering a marriage in the registry office): on the other hand, they consider possible to identify Sharia marriage and cohabitation (сoncubinage).
