Abstract
The article addresses the problem of ritual riddle from the perspective of the cognitive-discursive approach in view of extralinguistic factors. The paper aims at giving an integral description to ritual riddle from the standpoint of the cognitive-discursive paradigm of linguistic knowledge. The research work is carried out on the data of the Vedic riddle brahmodya . The methodology of the research is based on using such methods and techniques as conceptual analysis, mental space modelling, analysis of format of knowledge representation in ritual riddle. The article clarifies current ideas about the cognitive mechanism in ritual riddle. The results are valuable for studying the cognitive and linguistic ways of the ritual and mythological worldview formation that is still valid. The paper concentrates on the difference between the concepts and their representations in two parts of ritual riddle. It is argued that the structure of ritual riddle reflects the cosmological model based on the binary opposition of “sacred” - “profane”. Much attention is given to the cognitive function of the ritual riddle. The author comes to the conclusion that the subject of interpretation in ritual riddle as verbal activity is a sensory image represented in the descriptive part.
