Abstract

Purpose - This paper aims to analyze the role of residents in performing arts festivals, focusing on the case of Gwacheon Festival, and to derive implications from the case study. Design, data, and methodology - This study analyzed the participation of residents by dividing them into the type of participation and the degree of participation. To this end, data was collected through literature research and the participation level classification was verified by related parties and received supplementary opinions. Result - The most common type of residents'' participation in the festival was "functional participation" in terms of "festival operation," In addition, residents began to actively participate in "setting agendas" in 2015, which led to active participation in all types of participation from 2017. Conclusions - The study has the following implications: The first is that efforts are needed to lead the participation of residents in the performing arts festival to match the identity of the festival. Secondly, organizationalization and systematization should be done in the participation of residents in the overall. The third is that a preliminary consultation system between the heads of local governments and residents is needed.
