Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the perception of usefulness that intermediate and advanced Korean learners feel in Korean listening learning according to the type of drama subtitles through surveys and interviews. The types of subtitles were set to three: learners’ native language, Korean, and no subtitles. Learners were classified according to characteristics such as native language, age, and learning period, and the effect of each characteristic on the perception of usefulness of subtitles was examined. In addition, by conducting interviews related to subtitles with Russian learners, the usefulness of subtitles in listening learning was deeply investigated. As a result of the analysis, the average recognition of Korean subtitles was significantly higher in the group using Korean subtitles than in the group using subtitles in their native language and no subtitles. Native language did not have a significant effect on recognition according to subtitle type, and it was confirmed that there was a rather high correlation between age and the usability of native language subtitles. This study is meaningful in that it can be used to determine the selection of subtitles to be used and the timing of providing subtitles in future classes using video materials.
