Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of stylistic evolution of Yelets lace at the beginning of the XX century with a focus on its sociocultural function. The authors identify how the Soviet cultural policy that proclaimed availability of art to the public influenced Yelets art of lace-making. It is shown that the transformations mostly involved lace-making technique, ornaments, patterns and principles of compositional arrangement. The paper concludes that Yelets artists managed to preserve original features of their craft.
