Abstract
The article contains historical information about the Old Believers of the lower reaches of the Msta River in the 18 – 20 centuries. Local communities played a significant role in the life of the Old Believers of the Novgorod province. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between religious dynamics and the characteristics of the economic life of the peasants in the region, as well as events related to the introduction of a system of military settlements in the first quarter of the 19th century. The final part of the article is devoted to the place of the Old Belief in the local memory of the modern population of the region, as well as its reflection in family legends. The article is based on archival sources and materials from field researches conducted by the author in 2010 – 2024.
