Abstract

Like film, transitions in motion graphics create a narrative structure and tell a story by connecting scenes. They also create emotions and moods by providing rhythm to the overall structure. The purpose of this study is to derive the types and characteristics of screen transitions in motion graphics by analyzing TV program title sequences as a type of format mainly used in motion graphics. As a research method, a prior study was conducted to analyze screen transitions of motion graphics by examining the types and characteristics of movie screen transitions and the hybrid nature of motion graphics. Next, TV program title sequences, a typical format using motion graphics, were analyzed. The five title sequences used here were intensively analyzed from the content to the screen transition technique for each section. The five sequences are categorized according to the transition type in the following order - use of cuts for continuity, the use of cuts for rhythm and intended effect, the use of wipes, the use of invisible wipes, and transitions similar to camera movement. As a result of a further analysis of 12 title sequences, various screen transitions were noted; some title sequences are mainly composed of one or two techniques, but most title sequences use multiple techniques. Based on this analysis, the characteristics of the transitions in TV program title sequences in terms of the motion graphics technique were derived as follows. First, there is a tendency to use more wipe transitions compared to the number off this type used in films. Second, dissolves and fades are used very rarely compared to how often they appear in films. Third, cuts for intended effects are often used, and among them, match cuts and invisible cuts are used very often. Fourth, screen transition resembling rapid camera movements are often used. Fifth, the characteristics of screen transitions tend to vary depending on the technique and not on the genre of the TV program.
