Abstract

This study analyzes the types and characteristics of coaching supervision for professional coaches by using Q methodology in the current situation where coaching was introduced in South Korea. There has been a lot of growth and development in this area for 20 years. After constructing a Q population to investigate the perception of coaching supervision, Q statements were extracted from the Q sample with 33 items. In addition, 24 professional coaches were selected as a P sample, and data were collected through a Q classification for 33 statements. Then, a key person analysis was conducted using the QUANL program. Through this study, perceptions of coaching supervision were classified into four types. Type 1 is the ‘supervisor supervision competency-oriented type’, which recognizes that the coaching supervisor’s competency is very important. Type 2 is 'the type that emphasizes the reinforcement of the supervisor's coaching competence', and coaching supervision recognizes that it is necessary to strengthen the coaching competence of the supervisor. Type 3 is the ‘coaching supervisor relationship establishing type’, which recognizes the importance of establishing the relationship between the supervisor and the supervisor. Type 4 is 'a type that emphasizes system establishment of coaching supervision', and recognizes that the coaching supervision system needs to be established and spread in order to improve the quality of coaching and to strengthen the coach's coaching competency. This study confirms the recognition types and characteristics of coaching supervision of domestic professional coaches. The results of this study will be used as basic data for defining the concept of coaching supervision, establishing a curriculum, establishing a system, and developing educational programs.
