Abstract

This article aims to review academic achievements in the field of French and Italian history in Korea during the last two years(2015~2016). Though research on the French Revolution and Italian history yielded significant results, French history studies in general declined: the number of books and articles sharply decreased. Some difficulties seem to have exerted a great influence on that gloomy situation: a lack of new researchers; rare opportunities to find a permanent job in academics; aging of scholars; the humanities in crisis. The future does not look so optimistic.
Still, there were some hopeful indications. First and foremost, a group of young researchers came up with vigor by publishing four articles in a recognized academic journal. They were all undergraduates or graduate students and showed signs of future excellence.
In addition, strenuous efforts were made to diversify research agenda among scholars. Their interest was extended to the 21st century and a comparative study undertaken between French history and Korean. An analysis was also set out to examine the perceptions of the French government and press toward Korean affairs. Memory studies were not missed out, particularly on the themes covering a period of hundred years. Last but not least, researchers were widely encouraged to look at other periods beyond theirs.
