Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary students' expressions and errors in their solutions of addition and subtraction word problems involving various situations and to induce some didactical implications on teaching the expressions using □ which characterize the early algebra in the level of arithmetic. For this purpose, we selected 64 elementary school second graders who have learned the inverse operation relation of addition and subtraction and the addition and subtraction expressions using □ in the former semester of the second grade. And based on the research of Caldwell et al.(2011), six items were constructed as a test tool according to the purpose of this study. The data was collected and analyzed by types of expressions, types of errors, and characteristics of errors. From the results of the analysis, we found some significant implications on teaching expressions using □ in elementary school mathematics.
