Abstract

The article analyses the influence of the natural factor on the peasant rebellion of 1920-1921 in Tambov province. Relying on a wide range of archival sources and eyewitnesses’ memories, the author identifies the role of landscape and weather conditions in the military conflict. The role of natural objects (ravines, forest, marsh) in rebellious brigades’ manoeuvring is identified. The issue of using natural objects as natural shelters is covered. The conclusion is made that the rebels had a certain tactical advantage due to their knowledge of local relief and location of natural shelters.
