Abstract

Purpose : This study used a descriptive investigative design to explore educational needs of communication the purpose of establishing communication education program for nurses in psychiatric wards and emergency room. Method : A survey was conducted on 190 nurses working in psychiatric wards and emergency room located in J, K and I cities. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA and paired t-test with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. For the purpose of analyzing educational need of communication, we analyzed data through an importance-performance analysis and the Borich needs assessment. Results : The average importance of the communication education of nurses in psychiatric wards and emergency room was 3.60±0.36 out of 5, and the average communication ability was 3.47±0.31 out of 5. A t-test on the difference between IPA and Borich needs assessment showed the highest educational need of communication in the categories of Goal settings, and ‘Actively delivers own thoughts using body language and intonations’. Conclusion : This is needed to develop on communication education program that can strengthen ‘Actively delivers own thoughts using body language and intonations’ communication for nurses in psychiatric wards and emergency room. Our study findings can be used as basic to design a communication education program suitable for nurses in psychiatric wards and emergency room to meet the educational of communication.
