Abstract
본 연구는 레슬러이자 지도자이며 행정가로, 초기 인천레슬링과 경기도체육의 기틀을 세운 임배영에 주목하였다. 연구목적은 그의 삶을 재조명하여 체육사적 의미를 살펴보고자하였다. 이에 대한 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 임배영은 인천에서 스승 김석영을 만나 레슬링에 입문했으며 제2회 아시아경기대회에서 동메달을 획득하였다. 둘째, 임배영은 지도자로서 천동문, 김제덕, 김화경, 최영길, 김문기 등 국가대표 선수 40여 명과 세계챔피언인 장창선 등 다수의 레슬러를 양성했다. 셋째, 임배영은 체육행정가로서 경기도체육회 사무국장 및 상임부회장으로 17년간 재직하며 경기도의 전국체전 3회 우승의 신화를 이끌었다. 그는 정치인이자 체육원로로서 활약했고 대한체육회 이사 및 인천체육인회 회장 등을 역임하며 한국체육발전에 크게 공헌하였다.
