Abstract

This study is a stylistic study of author Han Kang's three series of 『The Vegetarian』. This study takes as its main issue the fact that previous studies have been biased toward aspects of the topic and that stylistic research has not been actively attempted. Therefore, this study analyzes the way the characters in 『The Vegetarian』 are portrayed from a stylistic perspective. Through this, the purpose is to supplement the shortcomings of previous studies.
This study analyzed that the author actively uses various stylistic strategies in the way he depicts characters. First, the conflicting worldviews are clearly revealed through stylistic features. Second, it also presents a “style of (im)possibility” that explores possibilities in (im)possible reality. In this study, these stylistic features were identified in their relationship with the focal speaker and were named the “style of abjection”.
Of course, Han Kang is a contemporary writer, so research on Han Kang's writing style needs to be continuous. However, this study is significant in that it expands the horizon of stylistic research on 『The Vegetarian』 by examining how the stylistic strategies of the focal speakers contribute to the characters and themes of the novel.
