Abstract

The paper aims to reveal causes of the French language dominance in Brussels taking into account the fact that the city is a unique mixture of languages. The article analyses the process of forming the language situation in Brussels metropolis through the lens of the Belgian language policy and discusses lin-guocultural meaning of the metropolis languages. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that Brussels variant of French is for the first time considered as a basis for Belgian French formation. The re-search fin¬dings are as follows: the authors identify prerequisites for multilingualism development in Brus-sels metropolis and reveal social, cultural and political causes for informal dominance of the French language both at the city level and at the national level.
