Abstract

Moving images are videos of various genres represented by film, and they include the auditory elements associated with the accompanying sound. Often, moving images can be aided by background music to convey a story topic via more touching images. The shape in which a certain type of rhythm repeatedly appears in the melody of background music is known as a musical pattern. Musical patterns play an effective role in the memorization of a scene by merging visual images with moving images. Moreover, the repetition of musical patterns can simplify the experience of the audience, aiding in their concentration and attention and increasing their memory capability. In the current study, musical patterns that frequently appear as background music in moving images are examined and an experiment is conducted to determine whether such musical patterns can enhance the memory of viewers as they recall images. The number of repetitions of musical patterns as a video played was varied, at one, two, and four, along with a no-music condition. The results revealed that two repetitions are most memorable. Moreover, the pattern of the repetition of the rhythm was found to be more likely to affect memory in high-tempo musical patterns compared with low-tempo musical patterns. Thus, the results revealed that musical patterns can be used effectively in conjunction with moving images to enhance viewers’ long-term memory of a visual scene.
