Abstract

The article examines the origin of root affixes functioning in the modern Russian literary language. Originality of the paper includes the diachronic approach to studying the Russian root affixes. The paper aims to identify the sources of affixoidation as a word-formative means and to ascertain the stages of differentiation of root affixes and productive stems. Analysing the Old Slavonic and the Old Russian compounds, the authors conclude that the key role in the formation of the Russian root affixes belongs to the Old Slavonic words.
