Abstract

All humankind on the earth are now facing a global crisis caused by the COVID-19. It is widely expected that the age of human history will be sharply divided into two parts, BC(Before Corona) and AD(After Disease) as the coronavirus pandemic provides the watershed point. This article stands upon the proposition that all the serious matters posed by COVID-19 turns around the philosophical theme of the self-understanding of humankind. Since Homo Sapiens appeared on this planet, they — actually we ourselves — have occupied the top seat in the food chain by means of the extinction of a number of other creatures within a relatively short period. Finally, at the moment, the earth got sick and is at the point of death.BR In this context, I attempt to criticize the Christian conventional view of humanity which is used to support the Sapiens’ pride and arrogance with regard to nature. The statement in Genesis, saying that God created humans to be like himself, means that we are in a special and personal relationship with God. In other words, the concept of “God’s Image” does not refer to the substance or attribute of human beings. However, we, Homo Sapiens, have failed to be faithful to such a special position in the whole creation. It is, then, convincing that the coronavirus rebukes every human-centered arrogance which has denied the divine will to the creation. Therefore, this article concludes by suggesting that Homo Sapiens should be reidentify themselves as Homo Symbios in order to give life to the earth.
