Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the meaning function and characteristics of the Korean postpsition 'ui', and to understand the principle by which 'ui' is realized. 'ui' is currently classified as a determinative case marker in the grammar system, and because of its characteristics, it is also classified as a connective postpostion. The semantic function of 'ui' is described with a focus on interaction and relationship rather than the semantic properties of the two noun phrases. In addition, we looked at the aspects of realization and non-realization that appear in 'ui', and it was found that 'ui' is always realized when the meaning relationship between the preceding noun phrase and the following noun phrase is distant, and 'ui' is not realized when the semantic relationship is close.
