Abstract

Constrictive pericarditis is a severe, but potentially reversible cause of heart failure in case of timely diagnosis and treatment. Its diagnosis represents certain difficulties, since constrictive pericarditis is a rare disease and is often masked under the clinical picture of other diseases that cause heart failure. The purpose of the article is to attract the attention of clinicians and experts of ultrasound and functional diagnostics to identify echocardiographic constitutional criteria that reflect the main disorders of the physiology of the heart and are the most important signs in the diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis. The article is an overview of literature illustrated by authors' own material, dedicated to the value of echocardiography in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of constitutional pericarditis. Transstoracal echocardiography with a thorough assessment of intracardial hemodynamics and its dependence on respiratory phases is the first and most important method of primary diagnostic visualization in most patients with pericardial diseases. Along with echocardiography, the significance of other non-invasive visualization methods in the diagnosis of constant pericarditis is given.
