Abstract
The study aims to identify similarities and peculiarities of the Karachay-Balkars’ national costume and that of the neighboring peoples of the North Caucasus region. The article discusses certain differences of the Karachay-Balkars’ national costume, which is many generations’ heritage. It is quite rightly noted that it is possible to determine a costume wearer’s ethnicity by its decoration, cut, jewelry. Scientific novelty of the study lies in carrying out a comprehensive analysis of the Karachay-Balkars’ traditional costume, its comparative analysis with the neighboring peoples’ costume, which will add to the knowledge of all those who are interested in ethnic culture issues. As a result, it is proved that social differences were expressed more vividly in the national costume than in other elements of material culture. At the same time, prestige played an important role, great attention was paid to the costume during various festive events.
