Abstract

This study explores cases of topic changes that occurred in a middle school information science research project. While conducting a comparative analysis project on the similarity measurement between weather information andmusic charts, students acquired the background necessary for project progression. However, as the project advanced, discrepancies between students’ expectations and the actual progress revealed deficiencies in the project. Consequently, there was an intervention by the instructor to address changes in the research topic and research process. In this case, the instructor aimed to minimize student confusion by reusing knowledge previously employedin the original research topic and introducing a new topic that considered the characteristics of the students’ initial focus. Additionally, the instructor adopted some elements of the previously used data analysis process to ensurecontinuity with the steps already undertaken. The methods employed in this case study could prove helpful for instructors in other research scenarios, providing guidance on adapting to changes in research direction.
