Abstract

This study explores liquidization in English in terms of feature preservative properties by perceptual cues. Liquidization includes the phenomena that occur not only in the process of combining prefix inor con- with the stems starting with liquid but also in flapping that alveolar stop turns into a flap by the process of weakening effect. Since liquids hold rich perceptual cues due to their [+continuant], they can affect articulatory manner features of nasal coda in closed syllable as well as replace stops for liquids. Furthermore, in this paper, the main reason that nasals and stops are changed into liquids are attributed to two theories of PRODUCTION HYPOTHESIS and PERCEPTUAL SIMILARITY to input. Therefore, I treat assimilation and weakening as the same mechanism called liquidization.
