Abstract

It was said that the monks began to brew the beer called as the ‘the drink of the devil’ in contrast with the wine considered as ‘the blood of Jesus Christ’. In virtue of the monks, the medieval beer was reborn to the beverage filled with the care of a saint. Certainly, the monks were interested not only in the brewing of beer but also in the ban and the consuetudines of beer. In addition, the carolingian kings and the feudal seigneurs took a profound interest in the brewing of beer for the their political power and financial advantages. Anyway, it was certain that the beer was indispensable drink for the monks as well as the creating financial resources for their monasteries. In this article, it aims to reflect the political meaning of the medieval beer, especially made from the monasteries, under the attention of kings and seigneurs. Also, this article enables us to rediscover the feudal society through the brewing beer and the consuetudines of it.(Gyeongsang National University)
