Abstract

‘了’ is the second most frequently used word in Chinese. However, due to the semantic abstraction of ‘了’ and the diversity of appearance situations, there are many difficulties in learning and education of ‘了’. Until now, a lot of excellent research results have been accumulated in relation to ‘了’ in theoretical grammar, but unfortunately, these studies have not been effectively reflected in actual Chinese language education. For effective education of ‘了’, this study attempts to describe a systematic grammar for ‘了’ based on the theoretical basis of pedagogical grammar. The research results in theoretical grammar were newly interpreted from an educational perspective and the principles of grammar rules were explained to increase the efficiency of learning in this study. First, in Chapter 1, to discuss how to teach ‘了’, among the contents suggested in the existing grammar books, this study examined some of the major problems that are causing confusion in the learning of ‘了’. In Chapter 2, in accordance with the basic ‘frame work’ of grammar description presented in Deng Shouxin (2010), this study discussed how to describe a pedagogical grammar for ‘了’ in detail. Lastly, in Chapter 4, based on the discussions in Chapters 2 and 3, this study presented a draft for the actual grammar description of ‘了’ necessary for designing a pedagogical grammar for Korean learners. It is expected that the grammar description for ‘了’ designed in this study will be continuously revised and supplemented to complete a more complete pedagogical grammar in the future, and the pedagogical grammar will further develop as an independent discipline, so that the research in theoretical grammar can be reinterpreted from an educational perspective and play an excellent role in connecting it to actual education.
