Abstract

This article aims to examine the Dongguange edition of The dream of the Red Chamber which is stored in the Gyeongju Municipal Library in Korea, and examine the critical remarks in this book.BR Firstly, this paper points out that the specific version of The dream of the Red Chamber--stored in Gyeongju Municipal Library, out of 24 volumes of this book, 15 volumes (10-24) have remained-- is the first edition of Dongguange-published The dream of Red Chamber, which was published between 1791-1810. Furthermore, this paper assumes that the remarks in this book seem to show the archetype of commentary of The dream of the Red Chamber. These remarks show similarity with remarks in the Second edition of Dongguange, which was published in 1811.BR Finally, this paper points out that the value of this edition and the remarks of The dream of the Red Chamber is showing the commercial purpose of the publisher 19century in the Qing Dynasty.
