Abstract
The article provides a summarized characteristics of one of the most popular genres at the turn of the XX-XXI centuries - a fantasy. The paper aims to describe the specificity of the fantasy genre and to identify correlation of fantasy and fairy tale genres. The analysis of the fantasy genre origin allows revealing its specificity and interrelation with the fairy tale genre. Several classifications of the fantasy genre are presented. Similarities and differences between a fantasy and a fairy tale are identified. The conclusion is made that fantasy is a complicated genre structure that only partially incorporates genre features of a fairy tale, and fabulousness of fantasy remains a debatable issue.
