Abstract

The article is devoted to a relevant problem of ascertaining the actual place of the “Motherland” and “Foreign Land” categories in national mentality. To achieve this research objective, the author analyses proverbs and sayings. The findings allow concluding that these notions have similar content. Foreign land is evaluated rather positively; it deserves respect as a source of knowledge. Motherland is the highest value irrespective to its characteristics. The opposition Motherland / Foreign Land correlates with the dialectic opposition of spiritual and material. Such understanding is a basis for intercultural dialogue.
