Abstract

Objectives The study aims to identify the factor in manufacturing engineers recognizing the necessity of informal learning and its methodology.
 Methods The study collected data through in-depth interviews with seven manufacturing engineers from S manufacturer and the interview contents were recorded, transcribed, reduced, categorized, and coded. Validity was secured through document analysis and mutual consultation between researchers.
 Results The factor in manufacturing engineers recognizing the necessity of informal learning is indicated with ‘Pride as a Specialist,’ ‘Enhancing Expertise,’ and ‘the Demand and Expectation of the Supervisor.’ The informal learning to develop the foundation of engineers’ expertise is found to be the ‘Learning from Seniors or Immediate Supervisor’ and ‘4-5 years of the Training Period.’ The informal learning to expand the range of expertise is verified as the ‘Searching Knowledge Outside of the Organization’ and ‘Using Collective Intelligence of the Organization.’ The informal knowledge to intensify the depth of expertise is ‘Development and Use of Meta-cognition’ and ‘Interpretation of the Meaning of the Phenomenon’.
 Conclusions To promote the development of manufacturing engineers’ expertise, it is necessary for companies to provide opportunities for informal learning with institutional support considering various elements that affect informal learning.
