Abstract

Konsul is a new large-seeded confectionery sunflower variety developed at V.S. Pustovoit All-Russian Research Institute of Oil Crops. It was bred by crossing the VK1-sur line (Sur gene donor) and an early maturing confectionery variety as well as by performing two backcrosses, one self-pollination, group repollination of plants with their evaluation on the background of herbicide treatment and selection of resistant biotypes at all breeding stages to obtain a large-seeded population homozygous for the Sur gene. Subsequent individual selection with evaluation by the progeny of the best families by morphological and economically important traits with control of herbicide resistance was carried out. In terms of the duration of the growing season, the new variety belongs to the early maturing group, large-seeded, confectionery direction of use. The main difference of this variety is its resistance to the herbicides of sulfonylurea type, as well as its high productivity. The variety is intended for cultivation in SUMO and ExpressSun production systems.
