Abstract

The article discusses one of the essential aspects of the problem of the value foundations of a society and an individual - the place and role of basic ethical values in the context of dynamic social changes that accompany the development of high technologies. The study aims to justify the protective functions of ethical values in the modern culture. It is shown that ethical values included in the ethos of culture are both universal and culturally specific in nature and perform the following basic functions: 1) a universal regulator of development and application of potentially dangerous high technologies; 2) a selective mechanism for protecting cultural identity of a society and an individual; 3) the most important component of civilization planner.
