Abstract

The research objectives are as follows: to reveal causes and techniques of author’s transformations of phraseological units in the French newspaper headlines and to determine the role of modified phraseological units in increasing a headline’s attractive potential. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher for the first time identifies nationally specific features of phraseological units transformation in the French newspaper headlines. The following conclusions are justified: to create colourful dramatic headlines, the French journalists most frequently use lexically and syntactically modified phraseological units. Modified phraseological units produce the effect of freshness and originality, increase a headline’s expressivity and represent the current social situation.
