Abstract

In 1884, Robert S. Maclay received a permission for Protestant missions in the medicine and education fields from the Korean royalty, King Kojong. Thus, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches commenced missions in Korea about the same time. Whereas the Methodist has not grown well, the Presbyterian has experienced a rapid church growth. This paper deals with the main reason why Presbyterian Church grew more than Methodist Church. Some people say that while Methodist Church focused on medicine and education, Presbyterian Church highlighted evangelism from the beginning. However, this is not an adequate answer for this question. Rather, Underwood’s emphasis on baptism and his contribution on recruiting Presbyterian missionaries are more significant in responding to this issue.
