Abstract

The purpose of this study was to review the health impact assessment system in local planning in England and to make recommendations for the integration of health impact assessment in Korea. Health impact assessment is a combination of procedures, methods, and tools to identify the potential health impacts of a policy, plan, program, or project and the distribution of these impacts across different sub-populations. Local planning covers various health determinants of health and therefore, can be a useful vehicle to incorporate health in local planning. In England, the National Planning Policy Framework and Health and Social Care Act set the stage for health impact assessment at the national level in the planning and the public health, respectively. According to these national legal frameworks, both planning and public health sectors provide guidance for health impact assessment for local practitioners. The discussion section provides specific recommendations for each of planning and public health sectors in order to integrate health impact assessment into local planning.
