Abstract

This study examines iron tools dated to the periods of the Dongzhou, Qin, and Xihan Dynasties in the Guanzhong Plain of China. It is suggested that sites in these periods be divided into seven sub-periods. By arranging the iron tools within this chronological framework, it shows that iron tools changed in their kinds and types as time passed by. Until Period IV, which is the late phase of the 4th century BC, most iron tools were combined with bronze or gold and used unpractically. In Period V, which is the early and the mid 3rd century BC, the iron culture of the guanzhong plains rapidly developed based on the resources and techniques secured by conquering neighboring countries by Qin. it was started that cast iron tools were made for agricultural implements and iron weapons such as long swords, spears were emerged. The Parching iron technique was invented in this time. In Period VI, which is the late 3rd to the mid 2nd century BC, the iron culture of the Guanzhong plains was brought into Central Plains Area and it begins to form a Han Dynasty iron culture by converging with the existing iron culture.
