Abstract

This study reveals the possibility of exhibiting new-hanbok in museums through a case analysis of costume exhibitions. Moreover, this study explores the direction of museum exhibitions suitable for the new-hanbok paradigm. The research method was conducted through case studies of museums in Korea and new-hanbok brands. Nine museums were selected, and the survey period is from January 5, 2021, to February 20, 2022. Nine companies participating in the Hanbok Wave project were selected and analyzed for the new-hanbok brand. As a result of the study, the costume exhibitions of museums were focused on the collection, education, and storage of costume relics. The frequency of costume exhibitions in national and public museums was low, and it is necessary to expand the exhibitions of costumes in art and craft museums. Traditional clothing was the most common theme. The exhibition was mainly during the late Joseon Dynasty and the Joseon Enlightenment period. Most of the exhibitions were special exhibitions, exchange exhibitions, and exhibitions to examine relics. The new-hanbok brand did not actively utilize the museum costume exhibitions. However, some of the new-hanbok exhibitions investigated provided a different perspective from the current traditional clothing exhibitions and actively utilized the artistry of hanbok. Therefore, suggestions on the direction of museum exhibitions suitable for the new hanbok paradigm are as follows. First, the heritage value preserved by the museum can be sustained and expanded through the exhibition of new-hanbok. Second, artistry based on Korean traditional culture can be realized through museum exhibitions. Third, it was considered that museum exhibitions could be used as a communication strategy for new-hanbok to become daily wear.
