Abstract
This study aims to analyze various linguistic usage of the military unit slogans of the ROK Navy. For this purpose, we explain the structures and meanings of the military unit slogans. The result of the research is summarized as follows: First, the military unit slogans are defined as phrases that implicitly express the mission, characteristics, history, tradition, and core values of the unit. These also function as perlocutionary acts that persuade slogan receivers (soldiers) to change their thinking and behavior. Second, the most commonly used structures of military unit slogans are: the written letter of <Korean>, the structure of <expression+name of unit>, and the compositional pattern of ‘phrase pattern’. Third, looking at the meaning of military unit slogans, among the core values of the ROK Navy, ‘courage’ > ‘devotion’ > ‘honor’ are used in the order of frequency in military unit slogans, and expressions of superiority are the most common pattern of meaning delivery in military unit slogans. Based on these results, this study emphasizes the need for research on military unit slogans, and it also suggests a policy that can contribute to the expansion of research subjects and the systematic analysis thereof.
