Abstract

Newspaper headline summarizes the article s contents concisely that it effectively grabs the readers’ attention. Most of the literature on French newspaper headlines are still concentrated on the offline one. Today’s newspaper readers however go more online due to its ubiquity. So is in need a study on online newspaper article headlines. In addition, it turns out that a comparative study of them between different newspapers has not been done. This study aims at classifying French online newspapers headlines according to their structure type, analyze them syntactically, describe their properties systematically, and compare and analyze where their commonalities and differences are. The three hundred French internet article headlines in total are selected (Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Libération, one hundred from each title), being published between December 27, 2021 and December 31, 2021. A new linguistic phenomenon is found throughout this comparative study.
