Abstract

Because of the recent expansion of the Internet network and the rapid development of information and communication technology, the number of data centers and the power consumption are expected to increase rapidly. However, these data centers consume large amounts of electric power year round, regardless of working days or holidays, so energy saving at these facilities becomes crucial. Numerical analysis was conducted in this study with the change of various variables to examine and analyze the effects of various design and operating conditions on the outdoor air cooling system and to derive operating plans to minimize electric power consumption through introduction of outside air to the computer room. When designing the system, it is desirable to select the optimal air flow considering the heat generation by computer equipment, the efficiency of the fan, and the performance of the refrigerator and so on, rather than the theoretical maximum outdoor air flow. Compared with the results of a conventional cooling system with only refrigerators, it was confirmed that the introduction of an outside air cooling system could yield energy saving by more than 40% yearly.
