Abstract
Wind-drag characteristics around a large size fan that caused an operator fatality as a result of entering the fan suction during a performance test were studied to investigate the drag force acting on the operator and the safe distance needed to prevent an accident. Because of experimental difficulty, a numerical analysis using the CFX program was performed through the Fluid-Structure Interaction method. The numerical analysis showed that th drag force increased as the flow rate increased and a human dummy model approached the fan suction. The maximum drag force was analyzed as 911N and was decreased by 86.3N as the distance between the fan suction and the human dummy model became greater than 40cm.
