Abstract
The article discusses loanwords from English in the Austrian variety of German. It deals with linguistic and extralinguistic reasons of foreign borrowings, language policy of German-speaking countries in relation to foreign language vocabulary, classification of English loanwords, as well as key aspects of their adaptation in Austrian German. In addition, the article sums up approaches to the study of English loanwords (mainly based on printed and digital newspapers) and describes the difficulties and prospects of research in this area.
