Abstract

Binocular loadcells are widely used in low-capacity loadcells such as scales because they are easy to manufacture, and the strain distribution at the area where the strain gage is attached is uniforme. For the design of a binocular load cell, generalized prediction for rated output is required, In this paper, to predict the output strain of a binocular type loadcell, a theoretical equation based on the simple beam theory is proposed. In order to evaluate the theoretical equation, finite element analysis and strain measurement tests were performed. For this purpose, strain analysis and strain measurement were conducted on two loadcells, manufactured in this study and a commercially available binocular loadcell. It is shown that the proposed strain formula assumed with a simple beam can be usefully used to predict the rated output of a binocular load cell. The actually measured strain is about 10% lower than theoretical strain due to difference in shape and area effect of a strain gage, and this difference may vary depending on the thickness of the sensing unit..
