Abstract

Prevalence of the amateur approach, tendency for commercialization and expansion of the flamenco genre in the XXI century have resulted in misunderstanding of such issues as: what musical genres are characterized by the duende phenomenon, to what type of art it belongs to, what are prerequisites for its origin. The article systematizes diverse approaches to the duende phenomenon and tries to answer the question whether it is essential for modern flamenco. Scientific originality of the paper lies in the fact that relying on foreign anthropological studies and cognitive methods, the researcher reveals diverse approaches to the duende phenomenon. The findings are as follows: the author proves that modern understanding of the duende phenomenon differs cardinally from its traditional understanding and is largely inspired by Garcia Lorca’s essay “Juego y teoría del duende”.
