Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reconsider the historicity inherent in saengshindarye and cast light upon the changes it underwent as part of our native living culture. To this end, the concept and origin of saengshindarye was identified based on the literature of the Joseon Dynasty. The cultural characteristics of saengshindarye were also examined focusing on 『Byeongjailgi』 and 『Muoeuphyeollok』, which were written in late Joseon. In addition, the regional reality and diversity of today s saengshindarye was explored.
 The main results are as follows: First, saengshindarye is a rite demonstrating respect and sincerity, held to honor deceased parents or grandparents on their birthdays. It is a part of our native culture that was initiated in the mid-15th century by the royal family and spread to the public after the16th century. This custom of saengshindarye has evolved into the currently variants of saengshinjesa, saengshincharye, and saengshinchasa. Second, the spread of saengshindarye from the royal family to the public in late Joseon affected the time and place at which the ceremony was performed. Nowadays, saengshindarye is mostly held in the morning at home, and sometimes it accompanies a visit to ancestral graves. Third, in late Joseon, tea was used for saengshindarye in the royal family, whereas alcoholic beverages were used among the general public, and the latter are still being used for today s saengshindarye. In addition, a typical food used for saengshindarye is seaweed soup which is prepared along with other foods were good for the deceased during his or her lifetime.
 In conclusion, saengshindarye is part of our native ritual living culture, rooted in filial piety and affection that last even after a loved one s death. The history and meaning of saengshindarye are a productive topic of academic research related to funeral and ancestral rituals. Saengshindarye is also valuable in the teaching of cultural rituals, as it reminds people of the importance of filial piety as a part of Korean spiritual heritage, as well as being a beautiful and fine custom.
